Contact Us To Schedule Appointment

We are by appointment ONLY. Why and what does this mean?
To see Dr. Buchanan, you need to call our appointment line and schedule an intake session...but what does this mean, and WHY do we do this?
It's rare, and it is a reality that SOME persons or clients can turn violent.  Here are ways we protect our patients and our staff:
As evidenced by the Feb. 12 murder of psychologist Kathryn Faughey, PhD, psychologists and clinicians must be vigilant about keeping themselves, and their staff and patients safe.
Psychologists and additional clinical therapists who have studied safety in practice, warn professionals on the need to better recognize and acknowledge risks.
Caution is necessary because there is a moderate elevation in risk of violence in individuals dealing with some mental and emotional disorders, says Phillip Kleespies, PhD, a clinical psychologist at a VA hospital in Boston, who chaired a 2000 Div. 12 task force on education and training in behavioral emergencies.  According to the task force report, between 35 percent and 40 percent of psychologists in clinical practice are at risk of being assaulted by a patient at some time during their clinical careers.
If you do not value our safety, and the safety measures we take for clients, we are not the practice for you.  Please do not attempt to violate our safety procedures to gain access. You WILL be denied entry.
The following are protocols we share with clients, and we do not violate these procedures:
1. We lock the door.  ALL persons and patients REQUIRE an appointment to gain access INTO our main waiting area OR be "allowed" in. We are not a public office with an open door policy. All patients are required to use our doorbell and are not permitted to open and allow access to others not scheduled while therapy sessions are occuring, and patients will NOT open the door for other patients while sessions are occuring.  Our clinical staff will do so.
3. If we do not know who you are, and we are not expecting you, or when you are not a patient, and do not have an appointment, you may not gain access to our facility or to our clinicians. You will need to CALL our office and appointment line for entry for a scheduled session.
4. We screen ALL potential clients. We conduct an initial assessment on the telephone to determine a patient's potential for violence. If you have not been screened, and do not agree to initial pre-screening with your scheduled appointment, you will not be seen or have access to enter our facility.
5. If you do not call to make an appointment to be screened, you may not have access to us. We appreciate and value our safety and the safety of our staff and additional clients and children.  We do not allow other potential patients without appointments into our office when other patients are scheduled and are being seen.  This protects the safety AND privacy of our patients.
5. If you are someone requiring immediate and direct emergency assistance, we suggest for you to go to the nearest hospital or public mental health facility for emergency care, or call 9-1-1.  Thank you so much for valuing our safety boundaries.
